Verdun France
Dear Honey,
Rec'd your letter (38) of Mar 9th from Monesson and glad to get it, also to hear that Grace is getting better. As for my cold it is very much better than in the first of the week. I can talk now where for a few day I was so hoarse and coughing, but that has disappeared. Heard to-day that we go on our furlough Tuesday Apr 1st to Monaco near the southern border of France. Gee but won't I be glad to get a vacation after being over here going on nine months. Talk about the bad weather lately we have been getting more than our share of it. Raining snowing, hailing, and everything else that goes to make the weather miserable also the boys cant go no place for if you do you will get drowned, so we usually stay in the barracks or over at the Y. Well as to recognizing me when I get home, I think you will not see much change in my appearance, only I will have on a O.D. uniform I might be a little fuller in the face, but I have not got so much hair on my head as I used to have getting a little bald around the front. Oh yes, I weigh about 160 lbs now, a little more than I weighted one year ago. Yes army life is a great life, but the next army I join, I will stay right in the states, no more crossing the pond for me.
I have not sent the box home yet, but I heard they had stamp at the Y in Verdun, so I am going to try and get some. Had given up hope of getting mail to-day when the cook brought me three letters two from you (139-140) and an Easter card from Gert Smanam. Gee i had not thought about Easter until I saw the card. Well you can't blame us boys for being behind time, being in France. I can't image what a grand sight you will see in N.Y. when the boys of the 27th Div parade thru town. I have been reading in the paper about it and sure would like to have seen it. You bet if I land in N.Y. I will try and reach Nell house some way, so I will make a note of her address and tel number in my book. I hardly think I know what a telephone is or how to use one but some how I will manage the best I can. Just to think when I was home working I was using the phone nearly all the time and now not to know what one look like. We have a central exchange in our headquarter here but I don't happen to being using it. If I could cup up Nev151R I sure would do it. Glad to know that Herman Sis well and back home again. He can and will surely tell you folk about us boys over here, and how we live etc. Also how anxious we are to get home toot sweet. Well honey I guess by the time I get home and tell you some my experiences they will be old. Tho I have hope of being home by the latter part of May or the early part of June. Gee but I am sick and tired of this d--- country, but I guess I will have to put up with for a while yet That is one near on I put in application for a furlough, just to get a change in the scenery-nothing else. I guess I will stop now but first let me remind you that when I am on a furlough, tho the temptation is strong, I will be true to you. With all my love and kisses to my darling wife From her Soldier Hubby Clarence.
PS. Hope you have a good time in New York and also Olive. I guess she is patiently waiting for Fred, but I guess he will be home sometime in June, that is when I expect to be home. I got so many dollar bills that I got a little mix up on them, but I think I got them all also tho handkerchief and gum.
