In Camp
May 28-1918
My Dear Honey
Arrived safely at last in camp the AM about 10 o'clock. We got in to Washington D.C. at 5.45 am. Laid over until 7.53 am. We had coffee & buns while there. I did not sleep much last night as there too much excitement on the train. This camp is just a new camp only open this past on Monday. After we got off the train we started to walk to the camp which was about five miles away and on a hot morning I was pretty nearly played out but after getting my dinner I felt better. We had to get our bed and cover from the Quartermaster Dept and carry them to our headquarter. The first building I ran into down here was the Y. Just had supper and am going to the river to bathe and wash my clothes. There is no place in the camp to wash not even your face but we have warm driving water. My this was a scorching hot day. No visitor allowed in camp for 5 or 6 week and maybe not at all. There are very strict here. We were getting instructions all afternoon up until suppertime. Have not been shot yet but will get it soon. Just got back from the river now so will finish this letter in the morning. We have no light here everything is dark even the nigga are black. I applied for a position cutting meat and think I will get it. Will close. With love from your soldier boy Clarence.
