Verdun France
Dear Honey
Well I guess I had better write a few word to you and let you know that I am still in France and well. Monday I did not write as I had a big washing to do and after that I played ball, beside I did not know what to write about. This morning I did not get up until after eight and I got a bite to eat and played ball the rest of the morning. After dinner I took a walk down the road about three miles. It is a fine afternoon to walk. For the last few day we have been having some cool weather with a little snow, but I think that will be the last of the cold weather for the season over here. The farmer round here are ploughing and getting the ground ready. They are gradually coming back to their home again, but they have an awful lot of work to rebuild their homes. I then went out to the commissary and got some cigars and Laroney Candy. Gee but I have eaten lot of candy these last few days. Eaten more candy in the last few days than I have had in a year. The hills down the roads do look nice and green, it makes me homesick to look at them. The hun did not do much damage back of Verdun only bombarded the houses. There is quite a different in the country here up toward the front, the hills are nothing but shell holes and dug out and back four or five miles you would not think they had a war only for the damaged houses and trenches. We are now settled in our new kitchen, with electric lights and other conveniences, also a big relief to get out of the box-car I kind of think we will get away from here soon and be homeward bound. Maybe by the time you get this letter I will be gone from here. You can't tell, but that is what I predict. Last night I saw the moving picture called "lest we forget" it was very good and had seven reels. I was tired after seeing it, so that is why I was late in getting up this morning. To night their is to be a show called Jazz-Jazz. It was to be here last week, but it did not come. Well I wish you was here to help me eat this candy as I have plenty of it. Just now I am eating it. I have about three pounds of candy now that will not last me long, about two days. I have got an awful appetite for candy now, no wonder it has been a long time since I had honest to goodness chocolate drops etc. We got paid the other night and now I have about fifty dollars but it won't last long. I might get up to Sedan for a few days I am going to ask for a pass, they say that Sedan is a nice place and only about six hours ride from here and a day light try at that, so I will see some more of the battlefields of France. Gee but I do wish you were here to take the trys, but never mind some other day maybe we will take it but it will not be like what is is now. well honey I have told you all I know so I will quit now and send my darling wife all my love & kisses From her Soldier Hubby Clarence
