Letters to Home

8 P.M. Dear Mother,      I guess you think I have forgotten to write but I have not.  Been busy traveling ever since I left Camp Upton and glad that we are at last settled for a while at least until we build up this new American town and show the French people, what the U.S.A. boys can do.  Just got an envelope now and so I will mail this letter as soon as I finish writing to you.  Had a tooth bothering me the other day but it feels better today but if it get any worse will go to the Camp Dentist.  That are going to issue tobacco soon so I will have to get a pipe somewhere soon and I will feel more at home than lately.  We work 8 1/2 hour every day and 6 1/2 hours on Saturday.  Last Sunday we work all day in order to get things straightened out.      Don't worry about me over here as they say I am getting fat but don't feel that way as my clothes still fit me.  While at Camp Humphry I lost about 12 lbs but think I have gai...

(above letterhead)  Did not rec'd my money-order and am dead-broke but will try and get along until I rec'd it. (immediately under letter head)  Rec'd Mon Aug 26 Oceantime 1PM(11 PM Pitts time)  July 20-198  onboard ship My dear honey-wife      Well here I am writing a letter to you out in the middle of the ocean.  Just got off guard duty at 12 noon and go back at 4 pm until 6pm.  The work is not hard, but at time it get tiresome on the eyes we are relieved every 15 or 20 minutes for two hours so you see we are on duty only about one hour out of six.  We left Camp Upton on Sat July 13 and left the sea port the following morning.  Did not get a bit seasick and am enjoying my trip very nicely considering the number of men and the other loads that they have aboard.  Meals are just like them at Camp Humphey.  Having been reading book to pass time away.  Read that book of the movies picture called The Fair Barbarian....

Private CR McCafferty  47th Engineer Corp.  Camp Upton Long Island, NY Send me my long summer underwear as I will need them here.  Weather is cooler than down in Va. 10 AM Camp Upton Long Island July 9-1918 N Y Dear Honey      Well here we are at Camp Upton and don't know how long we will be here maybe about two weeks and then we go over there.  1PM  That is about as long as they keep them here.  Last week the 45th Engineer went over and I am transferred to the 47th Engineer.  Got in camp at 3 am in the morning went to our barracks but was short of beds so some of the boys slept on the floor not even taking off their clothes.  I slept on the floor and did not get up until 8 o'clock had breakfast at 9 o'clock and 10 am took the boys out for a 5 m hike returned in time for dinner.  The meal so far have been extra good, they even coaxed you to eat.  You can not realize how glad we are to get away from Camp Humphry....
